Madrigal Dinner

The Madrigal Project gives its participants an opportunity to journey back in time to the Renaissance.  The culmination of this project will be the creation of a Madrigal Dinner.  This is a festive event that includes music, food, dance, acting, and elaborate costumes.  It wouldn’t be complete without a Royal Court, so of course, there is a King, Queen, assorted Princes and Princesses, Lords, Ladies, wandering minstrels, a jester, knaves, wenches, etc., etc., etc.  If you participate in this project, you will be required to stay after school for rehearsals, and of course, performance in all of the dinners is mandatory.  There will be two or three dinners, scheduled over a weekend.

Enrollment Limitations: Acceptance into this project is by audition only.

Manhattan Project

The Manhattan Project was the code name given to development of the atomic bomb in World War II. In 1945, the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, ushering in the Nuclear Age. We will study three aspects of the bomb's development:

                       1) The history of development of "The Bomb";
                       2) The science of fission, fusion, and radioactivity;
                       3) The world in the shadow of nuclear weaponry.

Radio Shack/Panasonic Engineering Challenge

I’m sure you all have seen it in the plots of many movies and cartoons.  The good guys are being chased by bad guys when suddenly a sheer cliff appears with a raging river far below.  The good guys are doomed unless they can devise a way to cross safely to the other side.  Well, that scenario will be played out in this year’s Radio Shack Engineering Design Challenge.  Teams of students must somehow imagine, design, plan and construct a way to transport a ping-pong ball-carrying vehicle across a 36-inch open space from platform “A” to platform “B”, and then drive the vehicle down a 2-foot ramp to a designated area below.  The entire mechanical system(s) cannot exceed a beginning volume of 12 x 12 x 18 inches and can be run from a 12 volt (max) power source.

Teams will compete for redeemable Radio Shack gift certificates and will have a maximum of three minutes to complete the task.  First team (or best time) by a certain date will be the winner.

Enrollment Limitations:        10th grade (max. 16)

Spectacular Failures

One way to be successful in business is to simply avoid making any mistakes.  This project will be a study of some of the more colossal mistakes made in business.  Examples are the Sony Betamax video system, the Edsel car introduced by Ford, and the Iridium satellite communications system.  These were all spectacular failures to which the parent companies dedicated years of effort, committed major resources of personnel and hard assets, and on which huge amount of money were spent.

Students will prepare case studies of these failures.  They will detail the history and background of each event.  This will include the underlying business reasons and justifications for each project.  Students will then analyze how and why things went wrong.  Last they will offer suggestions as to what could have been done differently to either have avoided the situation or to salvage the project.

Enrollment Limitations:              Only open to members of the Finance Academy

Sports and Wellness

This project combines creativity and business skills to create sports facilities. The facilities are created using a timeline. The students will also produce, film, and edit their own fitness video.

Who Shot JFK

The mystery of the assassination of President Kennedy has fascinated the nation for over 40 years. Was it a lone assassin? Was it a government conspiracy? Something else, not even imagined? This project will use all the scientific and historical resources at our disposal in order to investigate all existing theories. On the basis of the evidence, our students will develop and defend their own theories about what really happened in Dallas on that fateful day. Help us to finally close the books on this controversial case!
